Young Estonian Catholics participated in the World Youth Day in Lisbon in the summer. The Estonian travel group, which included 15 young pilgrims and two priests, first took part in the days of the diocese of Porto together with the Polish group and then in the World Youth Days held in Lisbon from August 1st to August 6th, also participating in the Mass consecrated by Pope Francis.
Nearly 1.4 million young Catholics from around the world gathered for Youth Days. The Foundation of the Order of Malta Estonia supported the participation of Estonian youth.
The initiator of the idea of Youth Days was Pope John Paul II. World Youth Day is a meeting where – as the name suggests – young pilgrims come from all over the world. World Youth Day occurs approximately every three years in a different location. The previous Youth Day was held in Panama in 2019, and the last Youth Day in Europe was held in Krakow in 2016.
